Joachim Messing- Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Messing is University Professor of Molecular Biology and Director of the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he has been instrumental in initiating many research programs in the life sciences as well as in incubating the Centers for Agricultural Biotechnology and Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine. Dr. Messing is internationally recognized for pioneering the use of single-stranded DNA phage M13, the pUC plasmids, universal primers and polycloning sites for gene cloning and DNA sequencing. In 1991, he topped a SCIENCE magazine list of the most frequently cited scientists of the decade. His current research focuses on applying his gene cloning techniques to plant genetics. Dr. Messing previously served as a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota and held research positions at UC San Francisco, at UC Davis and at the Max-Planck Institute (MPI) of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. Dr. Messing received an M.S. in Pharmacy at the Free University of Berlin and his doctorate in Molecular Biology at Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich.
